Since its founding in 1995, SPIRITUS Chamber Choir has enriched the Calgary and Canadian choral scene with performances of high-quality choral repertoire. Known for diverse programming, SPIRITUS has championed music both old and new from around the world, and integrated various performing and visual arts within its performances.

SPIRITUS performs a considerable amount of new music and has commissioned several works by Calgary composers Allan Bevan and Marcel Bergmann. The choir has also premiered compositions by Quenten Doolittle and William Jordan. SPIRITUS has performed at the University of Calgary's New Music Festival and collaborated with Old Trout Puppet Workshop, VoiceScapes, New Works Calgary and The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Past conductors include David Wilson (founding director), Janet Youngdahl and Pierre Simard.

 In 1999 SPIRITUS won an international recording award for its performance of Anton Bruckner’s Os Justi under the direction of David Wilson (founding director) and in 2000 was a finalist in the CBC National Choral Competition. Over the past two years SPIRITUS has embarked on a recording project at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts. In May 2010, the choir will be issuing its first CD in over a decade and has started planning towards another CD for release in November 2011.

Timothy Shantz, Artistic Director

Timothy Shantz is at home both as conductor and tenor soloist. His choirs are recognized for their warmth, clarity of sound and diverse programming. He is Artistic Director of Spiritus Chamber Choir and Chorusmaster for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2009 Tim earned a Doctor of Music degree at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

Previous positions include Artistic Director of the Windsor Classic Chorale, Chorusmaster for the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, Director of Choirs at the University of Windsor, Apprentice Conductor for the National Youth Choir of Canada and Interim Conductor of the Richard Eaton Singers.

Jeffrey Neufeld, Accompanist

“Original, artistically interesting, and thoroughly his own person”, pianist Jeffrey Neufeld has appeared as a soloist, chamber musician and with orchestras across North America, Europe and South America, playing with “power, confidence and thought” (CBC Radio). Recent seasons have found him performing Bartok’s 2nd Piano Concerto in Houston with “electrifying technical command, personality and poise” (Jon Kimura Parker), the Grieg Concerto with the Winnipeg Symphony (“completely convincing” Winnipeg Free Press) and with the International Chamber Ensemble of Rome.
