"A Quiet Night and a Perfect End”

CHANT & CHORAL MUSIC of EARLY CHRISTIANITY
Ninth Annual Workshop of the Gregorian Institute of Canada (GIC)

FRIDAY, AUGUST 22 - SATURDAY, AUGUST 23

Holy Rosary Cathedral & St. Mary’s Anglican Church
Regina, SK

WORKSHOP LEADER
Alison Altstatt (University of Northern Iowa)

GUEST PRESENTERS
Valerie Hall (Holy Rosary Cathedral), Jonathan Achtzehner (Luther Bach Choir)

Whether beginner or experienced, immerse yourself in two days of chant: singing from chant notation, ancient hymnody and psalmody, and early Christian choral music.

End each day singing the ancient liturgy of Compline.  More than 1000 years old, the chants of Compline (Latin for “completion”) promise “a quiet night and a perfect end.”  Churches and choirs across North America continue to revive this night service for its haunting beauty and contemplative power.

A chant-inspired organ recital on Saturday includes music by Francois Couperin and Nicolas deGrigny, with Valerie Hall (organ) and Alison Altstatt (chant).
